Traditional flooring, whether tile, carpet, or vinyl, can be expensive. However, there are alternatives to traditional flooring that can save you a lot of money, including carpet samples. You will need to be creative and use some do it yourself skills to make these work. Carpet samples are given away by many retailers for free or for a nominal fee.

Some people have used these pieces to create attractive area rugs or even to carpet entire rooms. You can arrange samples into any pattern you like, and then adhere them to the floor or carpet pad with glue. An area rug can be made by adhering the samples to a sheet or drop cloth. If you want padding under the carpet, you will still have to pay extra for that.

The secret to getting the longest lasting flooring is in proper installation. It is all too common for contractors to overlay existing flooring, but this can lead to problems when there are too many layers such as shifting, moisture retention, and shoddy fastening. Using the proper underlayment is also very important. You want to look for quality APA (engineered-wood association) rated birch or plywood. Hardboard, cement board and fiber board are also good options.

Remember to check all of your flooring choices for the temperature and moisture ranges recommended by the manufacturers before you make a decision. In choosing your contractor, check references and do some research to make sure that the company or individual has a solid track record of dependable, quality installation.
