Eco friendly flooring options are quite the rage today. Bamboo flooring, made out of bamboo plants is an attractive choice but there are a few considerations that one needs to look at before going for this type of flooring option. There are broadly two types of bamboo flooring: Strand oven, which is gives a very natural look and traditional bamboo flooring, which can be either solid bamboo flooring or engineering bamboo flooring. Solid bamboo flooring is the eco friendly one here since engineered bamboo flooring is made up of compressed particle board.
Once you have decided the type of flooring, it is important to check whether the hardness. There are various industrial standard tests, Janka hardness being one of them. Gone are the days where a household radiator unit was a large double panel metal monstrosity positioned at one end of a room, its bright white paint finish in stark contrast to the fashionable magnolia toned walls of the times. In modern interior design the style of the unit is taken into account, ensuring a harmony is achieved between the style of building and the décor chosen for the room. Indeed, there is a now a large variety of styles available – styles that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing (think of towel radiators in a bathroom for instance). Radiators have moved beyond a standard style with many DIY stores now offering ranges of designer radiators.

Here we take a look at some popular options:

Bathroom Radiators:
Most modern bathrooms will have a towel radiator fitted – this can be either a simple stainless steel two rail unit or a tall and sleek curved chrome system reaching from floor to ceiling. Modern bathroom radiators are just as much about stylish design as they are about function.

Column:
Cast iron column units used to be found in period style houses and hospitals, and are now coming back into style for those wanting a strong traditional style heating system in their property. Column heating units come in 2, 3 and 4 columns.

Vertical:
Vertical units come in a variety of styles including flat and smooth panel, T-bar, tubular, compact, traditional and even mirrored. They are an ideal option for those with limited space yet do not want to use a compact style heating unit. The vertical heating units minimal width allows the homeowner maximum space to be able to position their furniture. Such is the range of many designer vertical heating units it is quite common to see them being used as an alternative to wall art in homes. Radiators are no longer limited to being painted white – there are numerous types of finish available; from standard stainless steel to contemporary chrome and as mentioned above some can even have a mirror finish. Many paint options are also available for those wishing to match their unit to their wall colours.

The ever increasing range of styles and designs means that you are no longer restricted to buying a cumbersome MDF cover if you wish to conceal that unsightly radiator in your living room or hallway; now you can find a great looking unit to suit your needs and most importantly your style – and with so many DIY stores stocking them, you can get some great deals on radiators.

After the Flooring

After the Flooring
© tommerton2010

After we got our new floors put in, we had the fun-though slightly daunting-task of deciding on the furniture. Some of our research that we did was, for example, on designer furniture from fashionforhome.com. As we looked at the beautiful pictures, such as of comfortable designer sofas, we started paying attention to the type of flooring under the featured furniture. So we decided to factor flooring into our decisions of where to place the furniture we already had, and also for picking out new pieces of furniture. After all, we had wood flooring on some areas and tile on others, and carpeting upstairs. We otherwise may not have really thought about what worked best on the different flooring. This view of the importance of the flooring also actually helped us plan things out. It gave us a focal point, or more like a canvas, on which to create the furniture arrangements that not only look great but are functional in the best way possible. Now we're so happy and we feel really good in our house. It's amazing how expanding your awareness of things helps you make better use of things and also appreciate them more…even flooring! All things considered, it's actually the basis of the home, isn't it?
