Hand-Painted Ceramic Floor Tile Accents

Hand-Painted Ceramic Floor Tile Accents

With a little time, patience and creativity you can paint accents on your floor tiling to give it a unique look. The best tiles to hand paint are white, shiny glazed ceramic tiles.

What will I need? Overglaze colors which are made from oxides of different metals. A variety of brushes, a palette knife, a fine calligraphy pen, lavender oil and turpentine. Stencils can also be used.

How to proceed:

1. Decide the theme of your design. Choose ideas from nature, such as leaves, doves, or fish, for example. Ethnic patterns such as American Indian or Arabic work nicely.

2. Sketch your design onto graph paper. Use paper that is the same size as the tile.

3. Make sure the tiles have been cleaned thoroughly with soapy water and let to dry.

4. Mix the paint with oil and turpentine using a brush and palette knife.

5. Fire the tiles in a kiln between 1350 degrees and 1500 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can also update the tile you've already installed with a hand-painted touch.
